According to "Lehner's Encyclopedia of U.S. Marks," Mercer Pottery was established in Trenton, N.J., in 1868 and was in business into the 1930s.

The company made a wide variety of ware, including everything from ironstone, semi-vitreous and semi-porcelain pieces to druggist supplies and the ever-popular sanitary ware.

Based on photos of Mercer's backstamps, it appears that this double shield was used around 1879. However, this flip – a cheese and cracker bowl – was shown in a 1913 Albert Pick & Co. catalog, below right.

As you can see if you click on the bowl's photo, the pottery has a lot of crazing. But the lid is the strongest, heaviest, most stable and well-made of any piece in my collection.
